"You get joy when you sing and clap together
with similar devotional feelings in your hearts"
- Baba -

"Music is the instrument by which passions
are sublimated, emotions are tamed,
impulses directed to higher purposes"
- Baba -

"Bhajan (devotional singing) is one of the processes by which you can train the mind to expand into eternal values.
Teach the mind to revel in the glory and majesty of God;
wear it away from petty horizons of pleasure.
Bhajan induces in you a desire for experiencing the Truth,
to glimpse the Beauty that is God; to taste the Bliss that is the Self.
It encourages man to dive into himself and be genuinely his real Self.
Once that search is desired, the path is easy.
One has only to be reminded that he is divine..."
- Baba -

"You should sing wholeheartedly with the desire to please God.
God makes no distinction between a proficient musician and a beggar in the street.
It is the devotion and sincerity that matter.  Merge your soul in the Bhajans you sing.
Spiritualize your Bhajan singing.  Then you will experience real bliss..."
- Baba -

"Your life is a song on the Glory of God.
Sing it with all your soul, sing it aloud,
sing it in chorus so that the atmosphere polluted by the noise of greed, hatred,
and envy can be purified by the holy vibrations..."
- Baba -

"Those who sing Bhajans get what can be called 'double promotion' for they derive joy and distribute joy.
You can relish the Bhajan as you make it a daily function, like eating and sleeping.
You eat twice a day for the upkeep of the body:
should you not do Bhajan at least once for the upkeep of the mind?"

- Baba -

"The Lord can be addressed by any name that tastes sweet to your tongue,
or pictured in any form that appeals to your sense of wonder and awe.
You can sing of Him as Muranga, Ganapathi, Sarada, Jesus, Maitreyi, Shakti;
or you can call on Allah, or the Formless, or the Master of all Forms.
It makes no difference at all.  He is the beginning, the middle, and the end;
the basis, the substance, and the source."
- Baba -

Asato Ma

Asato Ma Sad Gamaya
Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya
Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya

From the unreal, lead me to the real
From darkness, lead me to the light
From death, lead me to immortality.

Van onwaarheid leid mij naar waarheid
Van duisternis leid mij naar licht
Van dood leid mij naar onsterfelijkheid

Baba's speech:
'prEma swaroopulaaraa!' - 'Embodyments of love'

"The spirit present in all of the beings is varily seen as that of mind. They are all full of the essential love. Without love, it is all just a pun, without love you can not be happy."

Priya Vaakya

priya vaakya PradaanEna
sarvE tushyanti jantavaH
tasmaat tadEva vaktavyaM
vachanE kaa daridrataa?

All beings are pleased when kind words are offered.
Hence speak only thus.
Is there a scarcity for good words?

[Originally this verse is from: chaaNakya nIti]

Pata Paduma

paaTa paaDumaa Krishna paluku tEne lolukunaTula
maaTalaaDumaa Mukunda manasu teeragaa
vEda saaramanta teesi naadaroopamuganu maarchi
vENuvandu tirugabOsi gaana roopamuganu maaku

Oh Krishna! Sing a song like sweetness of nectar (amrit) flows.
Oh
Mukunda! Talk with me till my heart satisfies.
Take the essence of the Vedas and convert into a musical rhythm
Fill it into Your Divine Flute and hand us as a song.

Adhika Bashinchu

Adhika Bashinchu Suratvam Adhikamaye
Karyasurata Kshininchi Karagipoye
Bhakti Visvasamulandu Rakti Tolage
Badhyatalu Leni Svatantraparatra Heche
Neti Vidyardhi Bratuku i Pati Daye

The valorous speech has crossed all leaps bounds.
The efficiency in action has decreased and melted away.
Interest in devotion and faith have been lost.
Freedom bereft of responsibility has increased.
This how the life of today's student has become.

Chaduvulu

Chaduvulu Nerchiti Nanchu
Garvamu Vahinchanradu
Mikunna Chaduvu Ae Partidi
Vidyakun Vinayeme Sadrupamu
Garva Ahamkaramul Vidi
Hrudi Tanan Ghatimchedan
Sugati Voyi Avidyapati

Students! One should not pride oneself by one's learning.
To what extent is your knowledge?
True education is being humble, sheading one's ego and pride,
and following the right path, oh Master of foolishness!

Satya Vaakku Valana

satya vaakku valana sanmaanamun galgu
satya yutuDunDu sowkhya yasassu nandu
satya jeevitamunakanna nitya mEdilEdu
unnamaaTa telupuchunnamaaTa

A speaker of truth is bestowed with happiness by truth itself.
There is nothing more everlasting than the life of truthfulness,
the fact as being revealed!

Allaa Yanchu

allaayanchu mohammadeeyulu
jehOvaayanchu sat craistavul
pullabjaakshu DaTamchu vaishNavulu
SambhO yamchu Saivul sadaa
prahlaadambuna golva andariki aayuraarOgya
sampada laabhambu losangi rakshinchu
dEvunDu okkaDE yamchu bhaaavinchuDee

pulla + abja + aksha this is the division of the word in Sanskrit.
PULLA  means, wide
ABJA  means, golden lotus
AKSHA means, eyes

So the total meaning is 'widened golden lotus eyed one' that is Lord Vishnu.

Mohammedans say "Allah"!
Christians say "Jehovah"!
Vaishnavas say "Vishnu"!
Shaivites say "Shambo"!
When worshipped with joy,
the God who confers longevity and health
and protects is only one. Believe in this.

Vidya

vidyaa naama narasya roopam adhikam
praChChanna guptam dhanam
vidyaa bhOgakari yaSas sukhakari
vidyaa guruNaam guruH
vidyaa bandhu janO vidESa gamanE
vidyaa paraa dEvataa
vidyaa raajasu poojitaa nahi dhanam
vidyaa viheenaH paSuH

Updated translation:
Knowledge is human's extra beauty
it's an open hidden treasure.
Knowledge gives you material luxuries (Bhoga) and also
it gives you fame (yaSas) and comforts (Sukha).
The guru of gurus.
During foreign visit, knowledge is our kin.
Knowledge is the ultimate Godhead.
Only knowledge is worshiped and not wealth.
One who doesn't posses this knowledge is truly an animal.

[Vidya (true learning) is far superior to humans.
Vidya confers fame and auspiciousness.
Vidya is the teacher of all teachers.
Vidya is the relative when traveling abroad.
Vidya confers supreme vision.
Vidya is worshiped and honored by kings and not by money.
Man devoid of Vidya is verily a beast. ]

Gâyatrî [*]

Om Bhur Bhuvah Suvah
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

We meditate on that most adorable,
most desirable and most enchanting luster
 (effulgence) of our supreme Lord,
who is our creator, inspirer and source of eternal joy.
May this light inspire and illumine our intellect
(and dispel the darkness).

Gâyatrî word for word:

 Aum: The primeval sound
(from which all sounds emerge);
Bhur: the body, the materialization of the earth; who is our inspirer;
Bhuvah: the life force, the vibration, who is our creator;
Suvaha: heaven; who is the abode of supreme joy;
Tat: of that;
Savitur: from whom all creations emerge; the Sun God who is our life source;
Varenyam: to be wished for, desirable, excellent, best among;
Bhargo: luster or effulgence;
Devasya: supreme (Lord);
Dheemahi: We meditate upon;
Dhiyo: intellect (activities of the intellect)
Yo: may this light;
Naha: our;
Prachodayat: inspire/illumine.

Sadayam:

sadayam hRdayam
yasya bhaashitam satya bhooshitam
dEham parahitE yasyaam
kalau naasti param sukham

In this age of Kali,
there is no greater comfort than
a heart full of compassion, speech full of truth and
a body dedicated to selfless service.

Another version of this is:

sadayam hRdayam
yasya bhaashitam satya bhooshitaM
dEhaH parahitE yasya
kalistasya karOti kiM?

What can even fate (kali) do to the person,
whose heart is filled with compassion,
whose words always reflect the truth and
whose body is always meant to help others.

"Let the different faiths exist, let them flourish and let the Glory of God be sung in all the languages, and in a verity of tunes.  That should be the ideal.  Respect the differences between the faiths and recognize them as valid as long as they do not extinguish the flames of unity..."
- Baba -
